Get Your Dream Closet – Spring Cleaning

This is the time when people are usually throwing away things they never use. I looked in my closet last week an noticed a lot of stuff that I am not wearing. I remember I did the same thing last year and though “Well, I can keep this because I can wear it with…” And here it is. A year later and guess what? I still have NOT worn the things I said I was last year! Have you ever done this?

Go from this…

To this…

These images are NOT of my closet but looking at mine made me think about what I could do to get it organized better to get rid of stuff I am not wearing or using.

I usually walk through my closet and yank stuff that I am not wearing off the hangars and place them in bins or piles.

To get organized create bins marked with…

1. Keep it. This works if you have a pile of stuff sitting on the floor like the image above. I don’t think its worth it to take clothes OFF the hangars and place them in bins. I will have to hang them up again. No point in doing it the hard way.

2. Toss it. This bin is for things that are damaged (stains, holes, tears, etc.). Instead of throwing them away get creative by visiting a fabric store or finding new uses for things. You can create a new pair of denim shorts if you have holes in the knees. You can use the remaining fabric for creating your own storage boxes. Just take sturdy cardboard and cover it with denim. This box goes for about $18.50 at Overstock.com. Save some cash and make your own!

3. SELL, SELL, SELL! On eBay or some other online auction site. I have a pair of Christian Louboutins I purchased 1.5 years ago that seem to have shrunk overnight. LOL. I can’t bring myself to selling. They are my favorite pair.

4. Be kind and donate. When I am donating or giving something away I ask myself “Would I wear this?” If not, don’t think someone else will. Especially if it is damaged. Another plus is the tax benefit. For single filers you have to donate over $5K and married filers it’s almost $12K in items. Of course it’s not that simple. I am not a tax authority. Contact your tax preparer for more info.

Hopefully you find this information useful to get your closet closer to your dream. Maybe the money you make in selling can help fund your new closet! I’m still aiming for a closet like Oprah’s or Mariah Carey’s! *heaven*
